Characterization of thermoelectric materials

Materials Characterization Online Seminar Series - Part 4 of 6

Thermoelectric materials can convert electricity and heat directly.

The application to the Peltier cooler, reuse of the unused heat, the heat flux sensor, and so on, is expected. In the thermoelectric material, the evaluation of the figure of merit at one temperature is very important. In fact, the figure of merit is calculated from measurement results of Seebeck coefficient, electric resistivity, and thermal conductivity (thermal diffusivity and specific heat capacity). On the other hand, in thermoelectric module, the performance evaluation in large temperature difference is very important. In fact, the conversion efficiency is calculated from measurement results of output power and heat flow. In this talk we explain the evaluation method of thermoelectric material and module, and introduce the measurement result by ZEM (Seebeck coefficient and electric resistivity), Mini-PEM, PEM-2, F-PEM (conversion efficiency, output power and heat flow).

Note: A link to the video recording of this event will be provided to all registrants, even if they are unable to attend at the time of broadcast.

Speaker: Dr. Satoaki Ikeuchi - Advance Riko Inc. Dr. Ikeuchi received his Ph.D in Science in 2005, from the Osaka University, on the Study of chemical thermodynamics. He then worked for the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), and as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Thermophysical Property Standard Group at the National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ) (Research of thermophysical evaluation method by light periodic heating thermoreflectance method). In 2007 he joined ADVANCE RIKO Inc (ULVAC-RIKO Inc.), where he works in the development and production of thermophysical evaluation instruments (2 omega method, directly electrical heating method, etc.) and of thermoelectric evaluation instruments (output power and conversion efficiency, etc.).
