New standards in sample cleaning: The HPT-100 series from Quorum Technologies

The demands for precision and reproducibility in electron microscopy are constantly increasing—especially when it comes to the preparation of sensitive samples. With the new HPT-100 series, Quorum Technologies presents a compact, high-precision plasma cleaning solution that has been specifically developed for the needs of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Technology and flexibility

The devices in the HPT-100 series enable continuously adjustable plasma power from 0 to 100 watts, with an optional upgrade to 200 watts. This means that the range of applications extends from the gentle treatment of the most sensitive materials—such as ultra-thin carbon or graphene grids—to the efficient removal of massive carbon deposits after STEM imaging (scanning transmission electron microscopy).
At the heart of the system is a stainless steel chamber with vacuum-compatible components. The system is controlled via a 5.7-inch TFT touch display, which provides intuitive access to all process parameters such as gas flow, pressure, power, and process duration. An integrated recipe memory enables the rapid reproduction of proven procedures—a decisive advantage in routine work.
Two variants for different requirements
HPT-100: Universal model for general sample and holder cleaning, suitable for multiple TEM grids and SEM stubs.
HPT-100 TEM: Specially designed for direct integration of TEM holders from leading manufacturers, including front sample holder slot and optional vacuum storage magazine for up to five holders.
Both versions work with precise mass flow controllers that ensure maximum process stability and reproducibility.

Wide range of applications

The HPT-100 systems are not limited to a single application, but cover a wide range of uses:
Removal of hydrocarbons prior to imaging for clearer and higher-contrast images.
Surface activation for improved adhesion of thin films and coatings.
Optimization of wettability in aqueous sample environments, such as in cryo-EM workflows.
Reduction of oxidized surfaces for analysis in their original state.
Complete removal of organic substances in asbestos analysis.

Key technical data

With dimensions of 520 × 286 × 550 mm and a weight of around 22 kg, the HPT-100 series can be conveniently used as a tabletop device. The chamber measures 100 mm in diameter and 280 mm in length, with larger versions available as an option. Various pump systems are supported, including oxygen-compatible PFPE rotary pumps. Naturally, the series complies with all relevant standards such as CE, UKCA, RoHS, and WEEE.
With the HPT-100 series, Quorum Technologies is launching a flexible, precise, and user-friendly solution that is equally suitable for routine applications and highly specialized preparation tasks. Thanks to continuously adjustable power, storable process sequences, and an intuitive user interface, the systems set new standards in plasma sample cleaning.
