Online-Seminar "Instrumented Nanoindentation and Nanomechanical Testing: Techniques and Applications"

Traditional hardness measurement techniques such as Vickers and Rockwell require forces on the order of 10 – 1,000 N. These techniques are therefore unsuitable for testing thin films and small volumes of material. In addition, they provide a measure of hardness but no other mechanical properties. At the other end of the force scale, AFM force spectroscopy is often used to measure mechanical properties of low stiffness materials, however force calibration uncertainties can lead to inaccurate results. Nanoindenters do not have such difficulties and are designed to penetrate the surface of all types of material from low stiffness bio-samples to the very hardest materials such as diamond and wear resistant coatings.

Nanoindentation is the most commonly applied method of mechanical property measurement of small volumes of material. Additional nanomechanical techniques such as nano-scratch and nano-impact testing gives rise to a wide range of applications across many different research areas and industrial sectors.
