Cameras and detectors for time-resolved imaging and spectroscopy

iStar series from Andor Technology

Cameras and detectors for time-resolved spectroscopy and imaging have an image intensifier in front of the sensor. The image intensifier acts as an ultra-fast optical shutter for exposure times of a few nanoseconds. Because of the image intensifier’s high gain, extremely faint signals down to single photons can be detected.

The intensified CCD (Charge Coupled Device) und sCMOS (scientific Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) cameras of the iStar series from Andor Technology are characterized by scientific grade CCD and sCMOS sensors, fast gate electronics, and high-quality image intensifier.

The iStar 320 and 340 detectors have rectangular CCD sensors (1024 x 255 x 26 µm and 2048 x 512 x 13.5 µm pixels, respectively). They are mainly used for spectroscopy. The iStar 312 and 334 as well as the iStar sCMOS have square sensors (512 x 512 x 24 µm, 1024 x 1024 x 13 µm, and 2560 x 2160 x 6,5 µm pixels, respectively). They are designed for imaging. However, the iStar 334 is also often employed for spectroscopy applications.

The intensified CCD detectors iStar 320 and 340 are designed to offer the ultimate integrated detection solution for ns-scale time-resolved spectroscopy. The 4:1 aspect ratio is ideally suited for use with Andor’s Shamrock Czerny-Turner spectrograph series. The iStar 320 and 340 offer multi-MHz digitization for fast acquisition of spectra in excess of 100 spectra/s. Special operation modes (Crop Mode and Fast Kinetics) enable high speed spectroscopy with more than 1,000 and 10,000 spectra/s, respectively.

The intensified cameras iStar 312, iStar 334, and iStar sCMOS with square sensors are designed to offer the ultimate integrated detection solution for high resolution, ns-scale time-resolved imaging.

The iStar 334 series is very versatile and is employed for both imaging and spectroscopy. It is the detector of choice for use with Andor’s Echelle spectrograph Mechelle 5000 for laser induced plasma and breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS).

The iStar sCMOS cameras acquire up to 50 frames/s at full resolution. Therefore, they are very suitable for PLIF, combustion and plasma discharge studies. In addition, they can be very well employed for hyperspectral imaging and the fast and simultaneous acquisition of several spectra in combination with multi-branch fibers (multi-track spectroscopy). The dual image mode of the sCMOS sensor makes the iStar sCMOS also ideal for particle image velocimetry (PIV).

Generation 2 and 3 image intensifiers with entrance input window and phosphor options are available to match wavelength range requirements from 120 nm to 1,100 nm and minimum gating speeds requirements < 2 ns. All iStar cameras come with laptop-friendly, USB connectivity and a fully integrated software-controlled digital delay generator. This allows seamless integration of complex experiments at the touch of a button with full timing and gain control through a single interactive interface.
