Magneto-optical measurements with Kerr effect
Materials Characterization Online Seminar Series - Part 2 of 6Characterization of magnetic thin films and nanostructures using a combined-Kerr effect magnetometer and microscope
The NanoMOKE®3 is a high-sensitivity magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometer for the characterization of magnetic thin films and structured samples.
It combines two systems in one: it is a magnetometer for the fast acquisition of hysteresis loops, and a Kerr microscope for the imaging of magnetic domains. The talk will cover a few of the possible applications of the system. For example how the technique can be useful to the study of the interlayer exchange coupling between single perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB layers, or the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in synthetic antiferromagnets. The webinar will also explore the measurement of patterned nanostructures, for the characterization of the magnetic reversal behaviour of antiferromagnetically coupled magnetic structures, with possible applications in non-volatile magnetic memory.
The NanoMOKE®3 tool can also be combined with an electrical setup for simultaneous AMR and MOKE measurements or for current-driven magnetic domains in nanowires for the study of magnetic domain wall-based devices.
