Nanostructured electrolyte layers in SEM

A Phenom desktop SEM was used to image the surface topography, profile and fracture of sandwich samples of solid oxide fuel cells. This type of cell allows the direct transition from chemical to electric energy and is more and more in demand because of its high conversion efficiency, great flexibility and low pollution.

For the analysis of these cells, the Phenom SEM was used in two different modes: material contrast and topography. The material contrast mode allowed a differentiation of materials by their ordinal number and the detection of early granulation stages. The topography mode showed that specific topographic properties of the substrate prevented the buildup of homogenous layers.
