Zahner Lab - the new electrochemical measurement software

Zahner Lab is Zahner’s new electrochemical measurement software designed to control the IM7 potentiostat and support a broad range of electrochemical measurements.

Zahner has introduced a next-generation electrochemical measurement system, combining:

  • an updated instrument potentiostat, IM7, designed for advanced and automated test execution
  • the Zahner Lab control and experiment software, developed specifically for this system architecture

The update is focused on functional boost in specs and speed and operational capabilities of the software drastically enhanced, particularly for laboratories performing structured, repetitive, or long-duration electrochemical measurements.

Zahner Lab: new software capabilities

1) IM7 potentiostat control via Ethernet and remote access

Zahner Lab provides native control of the IM7 potentiostat via Ethernet, enabling stable and high-performance communication between software and instrument.
Key capabilities include:

  • remote access and control of the IM7 through Zahner Lab,
  • reliable execution of experiments independent of physical location,
  • seamless integration of instrument control and experiment logic.

This architecture supports both local and remote laboratory operation while ensuring consistent instrument configuration and execution accuracy.

2) Visual experiment design using functional modules

Zahner Lab introduces a module-based experiment design concept. Measurement sequences are created by:

  • selecting predefined functional modules,
  • arranging them in a logical order using drag & drop,
  • defining parameters at the module level.

This approach allows users to:

  • build complex electrochemical experiments without scripting,
  • modify individual steps without redesigning the full sequence,
  • reuse validated sequences across multiple experiments and instruments.

3) Custom Experiment Builder with drag-and-drop building blocks

The Custom Experiment Builder extends the modular concept by enabling:

  • creation of user-defined experiment structures using drag-and-drop building blocks,
  • adaptation of standard procedures to specific samples or test conditions,
  • internal standardization of measurement protocols across projects and users.

This flexibility allows laboratories to formalize custom workflows while maintaining consistency and reproducibility.

4) Simultaneous control of multiple potentiostats and multi-client access

Zahner Lab supports:

  • simultaneous control of multiple Zahner potentiostats within a single software environment (Windows 11, Linux, and macOS),
  • parallel execution of experiments on different instruments,
  • multi-client access, allowing multiple Zahner Lab instances to view and monitor the same IM7 system.

This functionality enables collaborative work, centralized monitoring, and efficient use of instrumentation in multi-user laboratory environments.

Application areas

The extended capabilities of the Zahner systems are relevant for:

  • fuel cells and electrolyzers: structured multi-step test protocols and long-duration experiments
  • batteries: charge/discharge cycling, comparative material studies, aging tests
  • supercapacitors: cyclic stability measurements and performance evaluation
  • Much more!

Across these fields, the ability to define, automate, and repeat measurement sequences is a key operational requirement.
