Installation of FusionScope in Prof. Andrea C. Ferrari's research group at the University of Cambridge

We are pleased to report that our colleagues have successfully installed a FusionScope system in Prof. Andrea C. Ferrari's renowned research group at the Cambridge Graphene Centre. Ferrari's group is an international leader in basic and applied research on two-dimensional materials, in particular graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and other materials beyond graphene. A central goal of the group is to perform the electronic, optical, and mechanical characterization of these materials with the highest precision, particularly with regard to their integration into future photonic, optoelectronic, and nanoelectronic devices.
The FusionScope will play a central role in this research agenda. The combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in an integrated system opens up new possibilities for the group to simultaneously analyze topography, structure, and composition on the nanometer scale. Particularly useful here is the FusionScope's ability to precisely position the AFM cantilever tip using SEM.

In the coming months, the FusionScope will be used to characterize heterostructures made of 2D materials. In addition, investigations are planned in which local electrical properties will be measured in correlation with topographical and structural data, for example to elucidate charge transport mechanisms in graphene-based devices.
The installation of the FusionScope thus not only marks a significant technological gain for Prof. Ferrari's group, but also underscores the growing importance of correlative high-resolution methods in nano research. With its compact design, the tilt function of the sample stage, and the seamless integration of various analysis techniques, the FusionScope offers a versatile platform ideally suited to the interdisciplinary challenges of modern materials science.
