Quantum Design Acquires Oxford NanoScience: Advancing Materials Science and Quantum Technologies

With the acquisition of the Oxford NanoScience division from Oxford Instruments, Quantum Design is becoming an integrated solutions provider that brings together measurement systems, extreme experimental environments and scalability within a unified portfolio. For users in materials science, quantum computing and industrial research and development, this represents an important step towards reproducible, automated and future-ready research platforms.
Our standardised, highly automated systems for physical property characterisation—including the PPMS, MPMS and DynaCool platforms—have been firmly established in the research community for decades. These systems are now complemented by the Quantum Design Oxford product portfolio, which provides access to the ultra-low-temperature and high-magnetic-field environments that are becoming increasingly important in modern research.
This integration offers researchers tangible benefits: access to sub-kelvin temperatures below 10 mK for investigating correlated electron systems, superconducting materials and topological phases; high-field magnet options for magnetotransport studies, quantum phenomena and phase-diagram mapping; and cryogen-free systems designed for high experimental throughput and low operating overhead.
Material properties can therefore be investigated systematically across broad parameter ranges rather than measured only at isolated operating points—a clear advantage for both academic research and industrial materials development.

A central part of the Oxford product portfolio is the Proteox® family of dilution refrigerators (DRs), which represents a valuable addition to Quantum Design’s existing range. These systems are specifically designed to meet the requirements of modern qubit platforms:

  • ProteoxS: a compact Cryofree® dilution refrigerator for academic research
  • ProteoxMX: a modular system for flexible experimental configurations
  • ProteoxLX: designed for scaling up quantum-computing systems, with high-density wiring and excellent thermal stability
  • Proteox5mK: continuous operation at temperatures down to approximately 5 mK for highly sensitive quantum systems; the coldest commercially available dilution refrigerator

Additional Oxford product families further expand our portfolio. The TeslatronPT Plus provides an open, highly configurable low-temperature measurement system that combines variable-temperature control, superconducting magnets and open sample access. It is ideally suited to researchers seeking to implement customised experiments beyond the capabilities of standardised platforms.
The Quantum Design Oxford group also brings a long-standing tradition of developing superconducting magnet technologies, including OEM solutions for customised systems. This expertise strengthens our capabilities in integrated measurement and production environments, bespoke research infrastructure and long-term technology partnerships with industrial organisations.
Quantum Design Oxford products now also benefit from our global sales and service network, with locations across the Americas, Europe and Asia. For our customers, this means faster response times and consistent service procedures, helping to ensure the long-term security of investments in complex cryogenic systems.
The acquisition of Oxford NanoScience is more than an expansion of our product portfolio: it brings together two complementary fields of technological expertise. For users in quantum computing, materials science, low-temperature physics and industrial research, we are becoming a single-source provider of measurement systems, extreme experimental environments and global support.
This firmly establishes Quantum Design as a key partner for quantum-technology and cryogenic research.
