Zahner Lab AI Agent: Intelligent Assistance for Electrochemical Experimentation

Automating and configuring electrochemical measurements often requires navigating extensive technical documentation and complex parameter setups. To streamline this process, Zahner Lab introduces the AI Agent, based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) designed to help researchers search, validate, and manage experimental workflows.

What the AI Agent Can Do

Integrated directly into the Zahner Lab ecosystem, the server focuses primarily on reading, searching, validating, and executing controlled GUI and file actions:

  • Read and Explain: The agent searches the full Zahner documentation to explain measurement methods, parameter fields, unit requirements, and Custom Experiment Builder blocks. It can also describe existing dashboards and custom experiments.
  • Validation and Parameter Suggestions: It checks hardware configurations and parameter sets for accuracy, proposing optimized parameter patches for specific research goals (such as generating parameters for a galvanostatic or potentiostatic EIS scan).
  • Configuration & File Management: It can write, edit, create, or delete custom experiment files (.zcx) and save hardware settings directly to your stored configuration.
  • Direct GUI Control: While Zahner Lab is running, the agent can navigate to specific method pages and automatically pre-fill parameter fields inside the app interface.

Example Prompts in Practice

Researchers can interact with the agent using straightforward commands:

  • Search & Explain: "Search the Zahner Lab documentation for galvanostatic EIS and explain when I should use it."
  • Validation: "I want to run an EIS scan from 1 kHz to 100 kHz down to 100 mHz with 10 points per decade — suggest the parameters."
  • File Creation: "Create a custom experiment based on the Chronoamperometry template with a 2 V step."
  • GUI Control: "Open potentiostatic EIS in Zahner Lab and fill in a 10 mV amplitude."

Boundaries & Operational Safety

To guarantee complete safety during laboratory operations, the AI Agent operates within strict functional boundaries:

  • No Live Execution: It never arms, starts, or stops any active measurement.
  • No Live Hardware Interaction: It never directly contacts or configures a live hardware device.
