Quorum Technologies has been one of the leading manufacturers of sputter and carbon coaters as well as other systems for sample preparation in electron microscopy. With the new QCoat series that was launched in February of this year, Quorum has modernized their reliant desktop coaters. The RotaQ is best used for conductive coatings in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) applications up to 50.000 times magnification when using Gold as target material and up to 100.000 times magnification when using Platinum. When intending to perform energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) with table-top or Tungsten source microscopes carbon fiber can be evaporated for conductive coatings that still allow X-rays to be detected in high counts (metal coatings are not suited for EDX). When doing SEM work with field-emission sources (FEG-SEM, field-emission gun) or creating thin carbon support films for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), a high-vacuum coater with integrated turbomolecular pump is better suited. The TurboQ can reach an ultimate vacuum of 10^-6 mbar, which allows much finer coatings for magnifications above 100.000 times. Higher sputter currents can be implemented to allow coating with oxidizing materials like Chromium or Tungsten, which will create even finer grained coatings so that SEM work above 200.000 times magnification is possible. TEM grids with carbon support films are best made by evaporating carbon rods in high-vacuum. The better the vacuum, the higher quality the coating.
