Fiber-Coupled Optical Homogenizer for High-Throughput, Uniform Scientific Illumination

Bentham’s Fiber-Coupled Optical Homogenizer (FCH) is a microlens-array-based illumination module that converts fiber-delivered light into a square, highly uniform field (U² ≥ 98%) at the sample plane across a broad spectral range from 200 nm to 2500 nm. It is available with projected field sizes of 60 mm × 60 mm or 120 mm × 120 mm and with either one or two inputs.

Using a custom optical design comprising collimating optics, a custom microlens-array pair, and projection optics, the FCH achieves a typical throughput of 50%. This is a major advantage over integrating-sphere-based uniform light sources, in which uniformity is achieved at the cost of substantial attenuation.

When combined with Bentham’s fiber-coupled monochromator and broadband light-source systems, the FCH provides intense, highly uniform, wavelength-tunable illumination for detector characterization, camera and image-sensor testing, solar-cell QE/EQE measurements, hyperspectral and multispectral imager calibration, and reproducible illumination of the sample plane.

Single-input models provide a passive optical path with no moving parts. Dual-input models feature motorized source selection, allowing reproducible switching between two fiber-coupled sources without disturbing the optical setup. A range of fiber interfaces is available, including SMA-905, FC/PC, and other connector formats.
