Webinar "Pushing boundaries in micromechanical testing of aerospace composites"

Thursday, March 24th 2022 @ 5:00PM CET

The new webinar organized by our partner MicroMaterials, in collaboration with Surface Ventures, will focus on in situ micromechanical testing of composite materials.

Multiscale modelling of composites starts from the in situ micromechanical testing of the composite constituents.

In this talk, Dr. Mario Rueda from IMDEA Materials Institute in Madrid, will present novel techniques for high strain rate testing of the matrix and fibre-matrix interface, together with a novel technique for fibre-matrix interface fracture energy characterisation.

Dr. Rueda will describe:

  • how the use of combined nanoindenation and nano-impact to characterise the mechanical behaviour of the composite constituents over a wide range of strain rates has enabled the extension of micromechanical modelling of composites to the high strain rates regime
  • a novel single-fibre microcantilever test to determine the fibre-matrix interface fracture energy.

Who should attend?

This webinar is intended for researchers, students, technologists and others involved in using nanoindentation for materials characterisation, especially those working with composites used in the aerospace industry.

NanoTriboTest Apps Note -  enabling rapid high-cycle linear reciprocating nano-scale wear tests to be performed with track lengths up to 40 mm, further extending the range of nanotribological tests possible with the NanoTest Vantage.  The application note presents a summary of two recent publications which have highlighted interesting results with this new capability.

Electrical Contact Resistance Tech Note - this module measures the electrical current and voltage between an electrically conductive indenter and sample during any of the nano/micro mechanical measurements (nanoindentation, nano-scratch, nano-impact, nano-fretting, reciprocating nano-wear) possible on the NanoTest Vantage.  This Tech Note describes 2 case studies using the ECR module.
