Press dies for producing KBr pellets and for x-ray spectroscopy sample preparation
From SpecacWe provide evacuable pellet press dies made of hardened stainless steel for the preparation of high-quality pellets with diameters between 5 mm - 40 mm. The press dies come with all necessary accessories and are immediately ready for operation. A hydraulic press is required for operation
- Hardened stainless steel
- Highly polished contact surfaces
- Evacuable for clear KBr pellets
Further information
Commonly, KBr pellets for IR spectroscopy come in diameters between 5 mm and 13 mm. Larger press dies are used for pellets for x-ray spectroscopy or other industrial applications.
For the KBr pressing process, the substance to be analyzed is mixed with KBr powder and is then ground. Afterwards, this mixture is pressed into a pill-shaped pellet with help of a die in a hydraulic press. Air is removed by a vacuum pump above the vacuum fittings during the pressing process to ensure that the pellets are as clear and transparent as possible. Once the pellet is ready, it is put in a holder and placed inside the sample chamber of the spectrometer.
Since potassium bromide transmits in a broad spectral range of 43.500 cm-1 to 400 cm-1 and doesn’t have absorption bands, only the spectrum of the dispersed sample substance in the KBr is recorded during spectroscopic analyses.
